The dream of each 16th-seeded team dispatched to the NCAA Tournament’s First Four in Dayton, Ohio, is to win a contest and then take on one of the Goliaths of college basketball. This year’s reward for either Mount St. Mary’s or New Orleans is the opportunity to play No. 1 overall seed Villanova in a first-round East Regional contest in Buffalo, N.Y., on Thursday. The Wildcats also answer to defending national champions.
First Four, East region; Dayton, Ohio; 6:40 p.m. EDT. BOTTOM LINE: Mount St. Mary’s relies on a pressing defense — so-called “Mount Mayhem” — and 3-point shooting. New Orleans is led by forward Erik Thomas, the Southland Conference’s player of the year averaging 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds. BAD START: Mount St. Mary’s lost 11 of its first 12 games but finished 18-4 while averaging 70.7 points per game.
LONG TIME: New Orleans is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996.
New Orleans won the Southland Conference regular season and tournament and enters the NCAA tournament as one of the best stories, considering how it rebounded from obscurity in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Privateers face a tenacious Mount St. Mary’s squad led by a rising star in the coaching profession, Jamion Christian. The Mountaineers won the Northeast Conference title and have lost only four games since a 1-11 start against a nonconference schedule ranked No. 7 overall.
